How to Choose Zirconia Filters?

Zirconia filters use high-purity zirconia as the basic raw material. They can withstand high temperatures above 1700 ℃. They have high strength and excellent resistance to high thermal shock. And their texture is stable, not easy to break and slag. Additionally, zirconia does not react with any metal solutions at high temperatures. Zirconium ceramic filters are suitable for all steel alloys.

Zirconia filters have the following advantages:

1. Significant filtering effect on all steel grades. Including carbon steel, stainless steel, cobalt-based nickel-based superalloy, etc.

2. Made of pure zirconia material, the operating temperature can reach above 1700℃. It is not sensitive to the change in the pouring temperature of different steel grades.

3. Excellent raw materials and advanced production technology. The filter is guaranteed to have stable dimensional tolerances.

Selection of Zirconia Ceramic Filters

When using a zirconia foam ceramic filter, the pore size of the filter should be determined according to the quality requirements of the casting and the number of inclusions in the molten metal. Generally use 10PPi and 15PPi products.

The filter size is determined according to the pouring speed, weight, and gate size. The thicker the filter, the stronger the filter and the higher the depth filtration efficiency of the filter. But its use cost is also higher. Considering the most suitable strength and filtration efficiency, the recommended size is <60m, thickness 20~22mm; >60mm, thickness 22~25mm, >100mm, and thickness 25~30mm.


A foundry gear sleeve uses a filter. The gear sleeve is ZG45 steel, the weight of a single piece is 3-6 kg, each group has 4 castings. The pouring temperature is 1580-1630℃, the pouring time is 6-8S. Using φ60*20 10PPI zirconia filter, a total of 198 pieces were filtered, and 198 pieces were qualified. The reject rate before the filter was not used was 13%.
